about

This song came about after Kevin Swartwood sent me a 30 second sample of a song he had been working on and asked me to remix it. He didn't give me any rules. I did two versions, one where I simply added marimba and synth horns, and one where I sampled it and did a Hip Hop style scratch rhythm take on it. When Kevin heard the later, he said he hated it. He said, that is not is not what I had in mind. What I liked so much about it, is that it came about by a happy accident. It was developed at the beginning of my time with the Ableton Push and learning how to sample. I had no idea what I was doing. When I dropped the the track on a drum rack and began hitting the samples, I didn't know what was going on, frustration grew, and I got mad and slammed a bunch of buttons. It went crazy. Random sounds were firing. Then I hit the sync button and the rhythm locked tight. I was surprised with what I heard. Then shortly after, when more relaxed, I churned out a new rhythm. The result was so unrecognizable from the original, Kevin hated it. I told him, “You said there were no rules.” Instead of scrapping this project and each track going to waste, I took elements from the first and bled them over to the second version to unify them. This track shows the innocence of Kevin and I's digital beginnings. We were in a band in high school and took a 12 year break from working together because we resented each other's musical directions. This marked the last time Kevin hated what I did. We have since went on to write 5 songs together, compromising on our disdain for each others styles and coming to appreciate what each has to offer. We have created some beautiful music together focusing on melody and breakbeats of all sorts under the moniker Forrest and Fire. Check out our EP on bandcamp. More will come.
